The employment relationship is one of the most important relationships you will experience in life, given that many of us spend a significant portion of our waking hours at the workplace. It is common that in spending so many hours at work misunderstandings, miscommunication and therefore disputes can arise between employees, and between an employer and an employee or group of employees.

Levels and intensity of disputes and their impact on people and environments can vary enormously. We therefore advise that these matters be dealt with at the earliest possible time.
The effects of disputes on people’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health and well-being are very real– for those directly and indirectly affected in the ripple effect. These include targets, perpetrators and those witnessing unfair practices, discrimination (sex, race, gender, age), bullying, or mobbing. We are aware also of the financial cost of disputes for employees such as when they exhaust paid sick leave entitlement and employers, in absenteeism, presenteeism, and re-training.
People come from their own life experience and will have different styles of reacting to conflict which are often unconscious. The automatic survival responses below provide examples of what may be manifesting during a dispute:
- to fight -such as becoming angry and arguing, escalating conflict
- to flight -such as taking extended time off work, avoiding the conflict
- to freeze -such as being unable to voice concerns or report issues
- to fawn -such as appeasing a bully, which worsens the situation
