Its Beginnings
I have great respect and admiration for Emily Olivero MBE who is responsible for advocating and campaigning for better services in Gibraltar for those suffering from mental health problems since 1992. Emily has a Bachelor’s degree (BScPsych) and a Master’s degree (MScPsych) in Psychology and is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society.
Amber Law has since it opened its doors in March 2013, been a supporter of Gibraltar Clubhouse, Mental Health Support Charity which was founded by Emily on 30th June 2011 as Charity No. 213. We have included its services on our website for our clients and other website visitors.
Clubhouse is a not-for-profit organisation which provides support in Gibraltar’s community for those who have been affected by mental illness and mental health problems. It is self-financing relying on grants, donations and fund raising to provide personal, face-to-face contact 5 days per week, with the support of 7 qualified mental health professionals. There is no cost to the public - it is a free service.
Clubhouse is:
1. Offering respect, hope and dignity within a restorative community;
2. A work-based program where individuals with a history of mental illness can develop to their full potential; and
3. Providing assistance, activities and opportunities designed to help members develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.
"Clubhouse Gibraltar provides support and opportunities within a structured work ordered day. This allows people recovering from mental health difficulties to participate in their own recovery process which enhances their self-confidence and self- esteem as well as offering freedom from isolation”.
Many people suffer mental health in silence. They do not want to be a ‘burden’ on their family or friends. This is where Clubhouse acts as a support service and a stepping stone for those who may have spent time off work unwell or in hospital and need reassurance and support before transitioning back into work or finding employment. Clubhouse staff can accompany you to your medical or any other appointments, if you wish, and advocate for you on your behalf until you can regain your own voice, through increased self-esteem and self-confidence.
Your mental health can be affected by any traumatic event. Many people going through any kind of dispute or conflict, be it in the family, at work or with your neighbour, through the Courts or the Employment Tribunal, are likely to be suffering from a degree of stress, anxiety, depression and negative thinking. This can also have an impact on your family life and work life.
Clubhouse users’ testimonials speak for themselves. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.00am to 4.30pm and Tuesdays 9.00am to 6.00pm and Fridays 9.00am to 3.00pm.
